Religion like the rainbow has been highjacked by the world and is a hot topic amongst Believers. The word, religion, is often painted in a negative light, as if it is something to stay away from. We often hear people say statements like, ‘I’m not religious, I’m spiritual,’ or ‘why are you so religious?’ meaning why are you so uptight? When and where did religion become a bad thing, especially for God’s people?
THREE THINGS TO PONDER ON
The religion that we are called to is pure and undefiled and is from God. If we are God’s people, then He calls us to be religious. The type of religious practice that our God calls us to is good and wholesome. But the practices that most people partake in, in the name of religion has been defiled by the world. When we incorporate elements that are outside of God’s intension into religion, that religion becomes corrupted and is not from God. And therefore, we create a new god with a new religion. Note (Rom 1:18-22).
Religion must be God led
The type of religious practices that God wants us to engage in are as follows: taking care of the vulnerable in their time of need. In our society, like in the times Jesus walked the earth, women and children are the most vulnerable and we need to take care of them. The health of a community can be measured by how it takes care of the vulnerable. Jesus came to do just that, and we should follow His example (1 John 3:16-18).
God’s religion is practical
Just as a drop of dye stains a glass of water likewise ungodly, worldly practices are a stain to Godly living. They blur the future that God wants you to have and kill your spirit. God calls you to willingly abstain from them and remain in Him (Duet 30:19-20). God will never force your hand, but He would rather have you make the choice to trust and obey Him fully.
Choose God’s religion
Reflection Questions:
- What were your thoughts on being religious before reading this?
- What are your thoughts on being religious after reading this devotion?
- Can you think of at least one person in a vulnerable position you can visit?
- What can you practically do to meet that persons needs and show them God’s practical love?
- Have you ever or when was the last time you took a visit to an orphanage, would you be willing to do so sometime soon?
Prayer:
Dear Lord, I pray that you would help me to be more like Jesus every day, to be selfless and kind, especially to the most vulnerable. Help me to put into practice the good things that you teach and require of me. Help me to pursue a holy life, unstained by the world, devoted to you. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.
